Analysing Film Trailers

If you look at a trailer there are many conventions that they usually tend to follow. A typical layout for a teaser trailer is shown below. The film I have chosen is 'Never Let Me Go', mainly because its up-coming UK release and because I am a fan of the novel its based on.
Firstly an establishing shot is shown. Followed by a critic quote, in this case the novel that the film is based on is emphasised to show that it is well established and lved my many. So if you like the novel, you are almost bound to love the film.

The Production Company name is revealed, in this case the animated name of the company establishes 'Fox Searchlight Pictures' and allows the audience (target audience) to appreciate a well known and reputable institution.

A brief and interesting synopsis is revealed, it gives a precise and interesting overvue of what the basis of the plotline in the flm is.

A dramatic few words, creating further intrigue and suspence; attracting the audience who want to learn more about the film, thus engaging them and making them want to see the full thing.

If the film is based on a novel the author is given homage, this helps attract fans of the novel/author

Other films made by the same director are highlighted, so if your a fan of 'One Hour Photo' or the director, you are likely to enjoy this film too.

Quick cuts that vary in length reveal captivating/summarising footage from the film. This establishes the fundamental grounds of the film and is what hooks in the audience.

Famous actors/talents/celebrities are emphasisedso as to interest the audience. If you are a fan of Carey Mulligan, perhaps you will want to watch further films starring her.

Actors/famous faces and their award status is further re-inforced. This ensures the audience that the actors are professionals and portray realism in thier roles, which means the acting is of a high standard. Overall it aims to show audiences that the film is expressive and emotive and will captivate anyone viewing it.

The penultimate clip is the title of the film and this is the last element that audiences' tend to remember. So the name is hard hitting and will stay in your mind until the next time you come to see it officially.

The main cast, crew, institutions and companies involved are named. When an official film date has not been set, the status is 'coming soon', thus allowing a sense of anticipation before the film is released.
