Pan's Labyrinth

Year: 2006 – set in fascist Spain 1944

Director: Guillermo del Toro

Original title: El laberinto del fauno

Fascinated with fairy-tales, a young girl and her pregnant mother live with her new stepfather, a ruthless captain of the Spanish army. During the night, she meets a fairy who takes her to an old faun in a labyrinth. He tells her she's a princess, but must prove her royalty by surviving three gruesome tasks. If she fails, she will never prove herself to be the true princess and will never see her real father, the king.

The reason I favour this film is because of the unique and tragic, yet bright ending, the film is everything you would expect from a horror: Dark and dangerous, however, it’s also dreamlike. The protagonist is young, yet investigative, at points we see her drenched in mud, blood, rain and tears. She meets skin-crawling creatures; she must rely on her wits and her heart to conquer. Even in Spanish dialect, the film has a dramatic impact.
There are no excuses. See this film.
