Year: 1996 American horror film
Director: Wes Craven from a
Screenplay: Kevin Williamson
The killer's main target is Sidney Prescott (a masculine name) and in my opinion she epitomises THE FINAL GIRL *I'll explain this theory later. Craven also challenged the concept, making her a non-virgin, yet a 'final' surviving girl.
Scream was a box office success, it made over 17 million dollars internationally. It received very positive reviews (one of those beign myself) from critics because of its fresh genre appeal and unique selling point which was the mixture of genres - so a 'Hybrid'.
I hink it revitalized the slasher film genre as well in the 90s, similar to the impact Halloween had in the 70's. I really enjoyed watching the second time around, this was because I could now appreciate the refrences to several classic horror films that I now know and love.
All the characters in the film are familiar with the slasher film conventions. They know that you shouldn't walk in the woods alone at night. They know that having sex, doing drugs and drinking alcohol is a big no no but they all willingly choose to ignore those conventions.
I especially enjoyed that Drew Barrymore is killed a few mins in to the film (obviosuly for an amazing opening sequence) I can totally see inspiration from Psycho here!
